Hi! My name is Deborah, and I run Newington Cakes. I promise to make you a fabulous and perfect cake for your wedding day, or cakes for any other special occasion.
My own baking journey begun growing up to the smell of baking cakes from my family’s kitchen; my favourite was my mother’s spiced apple. Eagerly, I waited to taste it, as the smell from the kitchen filled the whole house. Continuing on from my parents love of baking, I baked for my own daughter; this included baking for her school fetes, where I gained lots of recognition for my cakes.
In 2009, I secured a place in the London Marathon to raise money for The Anthony Nolan Trust. I ran the marathon in memory of my Dad, who died of Leukemia. At the time, I was working in the NHS, and had many friends and colleagues who supported my charitable effort. In order to raise money for my run, I had lots of cake sales, which I sold, to much success, to my NHS colleagues. I gained lots of compliments. Through this, a colleague asked me to make a cake for her daughter’s birthday party; this was a stunning and delicious fairy castle.
The fairy castle is where Newington Cakes first started business, as I was then asked to make more cakes for family and friends for their special occasions. I begun attending courses to improve my baking; I have now completed the internationally recognised PME Professional Masters in Cake Decorating, as well as attended numerous courses with Cotton & Crumbs, Pretty Witty, and Faircakes.
It was once I started sugar flower courses that I became hooked; I realised that this was my passion in life. I then made the decision to leave my full-time job in the NHS to concentrate on my cakes, and it was the best decision I have ever made. My passion was for my cakes, and the kitchen is where I longed to be! Feeling happiest when I am creating my sugar flowers, I decided to concentrate on Wedding Cakes. I relish spending hours putting all the extra special details on wedding cakes. It is so important to me to get the cake perfect for each couple; both flavours of the cake and the decorations. I love it when I see photos of my cakes on a display table at a couple’s wedding, as well as photos of the traditional ‘cutting the cake’ moment, knowing that my own creation has a part in one of the most important days of their lives.
